Interview: Captain Fawcett

captain-fawcett

Known as “The Gentleman’s Stiffener” Captain Fawcett is the home to a range of Gentlemen’s grooming products. The products range from Beard oil, mustache wax, shaving soap, shaving brushes, safety razors and so on. This all started back in 1997 when an old trunk was purchased from a house clearance and taken home. Discovering that this belonged to Captain Peabody Fawcett R.N Ret’d, the Edwardian Explorer it was forced open and among the contents inside were oils and ointments and an old journal containing detailed lists of exotic ingredients. Taking on the responsibility of carrying out the legendary “keep a stiffer upper lip regardless” the formulae have been faithfully followed and are now available to Gentleman all over the world.

FULTON & ROARK Solid Cologne

slide1_home-1024x603

Are you one that travels or is on the move constantly? Men, let’s get real. We put things in our pockets because that’s just where we keep things. Its easier – we carry nothing! Our belongings are right by our side and it’s easy to access them whenever we want. There’s one thing though… Those of you that love your cologne ( me being one of them!) where on earth are we supposed to put that big chunky bottle? in our pocket? no! so now what? Well, this is where FULTON & ROARK come along and make this a whole lot easier! We had the privilege to interview the guys behind FULTON & ROARK…check them out.

1. Where are you located?

Winston-Salem, NC

2. When did you start this business?

May 2012

3. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to pursue?

We recognized that there are a ton of great products out there, but we felt like none really focused on creating thoughtfully crafted products based on what men really want/need out of the products.  We thought that the product in greatest need of improvement in terms of functionality was cologne.  So, we created a solid (wax-based) cologne. The medium itself seemed to really make sense so we set about creating a product that was all about the fragrance, but with packaging that would fit well into a guy’s lifestyle (pocket-able/ shatterproof/ travel friendly).  We certainly weren’t the first to create such a product, but we think ours is the best out there.

4. Describe a few steps you took to make this happen.

We did a lot of testing.  Our friends got all kinds of samples and let us know their thoughts, until we finally landed on our three fragrances Hatteras, Tybee, and Shackleford.

5. How would you deal with a customer who didn’t know what they wanted?

We get e-mails all the time asking about the fragrances, and which one they might like.  Fortunately we created these to be distinct from each other, in the most simplistic terms; woodsy, clean, and green.  Generally when you boil it down and lose all the extravagant terminology, guys know what they want.

6. What are some of your accomplishments as a business?

#1 seeing retailers and direct customers come back and ask for more after running out!  Once this started happening early on we knew we had created something that people appreciate.

7. What do you believe makes a quality product?

For us quality is in the ingredients and functionality of your ingredients.  For example, with our solid cologne we wanted to create a product that highlighted the premium essential oils we work with so we developed a wax base using Ceresin Wax that is completely fragrance free then layered on other scent neutral carriers to ensure the fragrance lasted a long time. We also worked to ensure that there would be no shine upon application.  Since we use very high quality fragrance ingredients, we worked hard to ensure that the base performed really well for our customers, and allowed the fragrances to stand out.  We are currently working through the same process with our upcoming shaving products.

8. Where do you get your inspiration from?

We derive a lot of inspiration from the concepts behind Human Centered Design.  Which ultimately means when it came to creating our current line of solid colognes and our in the works shave products we talk to all kinds of guys and work with The Clubhouse Salon for Men here in town who can get of tons of feedback from all their customers.

9. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

“Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!”  -Henry David Thoreau

How to: Trim your Mustache

579937e16c445e576f4fb85042f03823There are many mustache shapes, styles and sizes these days. This trimming tutorial will give you the basics to trim and shape the mustache you want.

You will need:

Firstly know what style mustache you want. Then once you have figured that out we can begin.

Dampen your mustache with water and comb through the hair with the fine-toothed comb. Look for long hairs that are sticking up or that are too long. Trim those hairs! Start at the middle of your mustache and work your way outwards. This helps maintain the length and bushiness of your mustache. After that move to trimming above the top lip. keep the middle of the mustache short, just above the pink of the top lip so you are able to eat and drink without it getting in the way or smelling.  Secondly, trim the top of the mustache for shape and definition. Some mustaches are uneven in this area below the nose and that’s okay, all you need to do is use a mustache razor. This is a quick and simple task.

Once you have trimmed those extra hairs away then move onto the next area, the bottom of the mustache. The bottom of the mustache is trimmed for a smooth even line otherwise your mustache will look uneven. This helps keep even parameters around the mustache. See diagram below:

mustachediagram

Once the trimming is taken care of and the areas are under control you can use the mustache wax. Apply it to your index finger, middle finger and thumb and rub them together so the wax warms up a little between the fingers. Then slowly apply the wax on your mustache. When applying the wax to the mustache make sure you squeeze your mustache to really get the wax in the hairs. Towards the ends twist the hair with your fingers to get a curl at the end. This method will keep the wax rooted into the mustache. Do this a couple times until you feel satisfied with the style and curl.

Voila, you are done!

That simple!

We stopped by the Pomades headquarters and had a great time viewing all the different hair care products they carry. Pomades imports new and unique brands from all over the world. We had a great time sitting down and asking the creative genius some questions.

Where is Pomades Located?

Orange County, CA

When did you start this brand?

Pomades.com launched in mid-2002

When did you realize you wanted to do this?

I checked Facebook one day and one of my friends said something like, “Anyone know where I can copy some pomade?” and a light went off that there aren’t too many options that are quick and easy.

What are some of your favorite brands?

It’s hard to choose because we carry a lot of brands, but one of our first was Geo F Trumper Blue Hair Pomade.

Where can readers buy your product?

They can view and purchase our products on www.pomades.com. Also check out www.thestache.com and www.royalshave.com

What do you believe makes a quality Pomade?

It’s about what it does for you. It’s got to make you look good, smell good and feel good.

What advice do you have for Pomade users?

Experiment with different hairstyles and pomades. You may currently like one style or pomade, but we recommend giving some other ones a try. Also, mixing them into a little cocktail also works so if you like the hold of one, and the scent of another – throw them together!

Where can readers find out more about you and your work?

You can visit us at www.Pomades.com or stop by our office in Costa Mesa, CA. We’ll be happy to meet you and pass along some pomade samples.
