We recently came across the Brand CRUX.The name is intriguing and the design and branding is eye catching. We took a look at their product line and immediately related to them as a company. They believe in the craft of grooming. Not only the ingredients but the lineage from the grandfathers, i mean this is where it all started and why its still around because our grandfathers were legends when it comes to grooming products. They say at CRUX that “CRUX Supply Co.’s products are chosen for their staying power — their power to carry stories of work and adventure from one generation to the next.”

Read more to hear more about the company itself and where they get their inspiration and how it all began…

1. Where are you located?

We’re located in Barto, PA – a small, rural town about an hour outside of Philadelphia.

2. When did you start this business?

CRUX Supply Co. launched in October 2013.

3. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to pursue?

We really wanted to introduce a line, comprising of all-natural and organic ingredients, which would present a healthy alternative to most of the chemical-laden products currently on the market. Our identity was actually inspired by these wonderful dead-stock antique apothecary bottles that we uncovered on one of our travels, which we currently use for our Post Shave Tonic.

4. Describe a few steps you took to make this happen.

After we bought up the cases of the dead-stock antique apothecary bottles, we spent about year designing, researching, and prototyping before we were ready to launch. We wanted to make sure our customers received a top-notch, high quality product.

5. How would you deal with a customer who didn’t know what they wanted?

We pride ourselves in amazing customer service, so whichever questions a customer might have, we’re ready to answer! We also offer sample sizes for our customers to try, so they can feel completely comfortable ordering a full-size.

6. What are some of your accomplishments as a business?

CRUX Supply Co. is currently run by a husband-wife duo (and a few very appreciated helpers from time-to-time.) We’ve come a long way in the past 10 months, and we’re super excited to see what the future holds.

7. What do you believe makes a quality product?

The ingredients are the main key. You need to know what you’re putting in (and on!) your body. Every product of ours is assembled by hand in small batches to help maintain cohesiveness and quality.

8. Where do you get your inspiration from?

We’re always listening to our customers with open ears.

9. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Dedication is the key. You need to believe in yourself and your products. And take yourself seriously – if you don’t, no one else will.

Interview: D.R Harris

DR HARRIS

D.R Harris & CO. LTD. one of London’s oldest pharmacies has been in St James’s Street for over 200 years. This family-owned business holds the warrant to HRH The Prince of Wales. They are renowned for their range of quality products for men and women. These include soaps, colognes, bath and shaving preparations, skin care and aromatherapy oils. The majority of their products are still produced by traditional methods, being hand-made and packed in their own premises in London.

1. Where are you located? We have shops at 35 Bury Street and 52 Piccadilly in central London. Our main shop at 29 St. James’s Street is closed for 18 months as the whole building is refurbished. We will be back there in summer 2015.

2. When did you start this business? The business was founded as apothecaries in 1790 by Henry Harris. His cousin Daniel Rotely Harris gave the company its name D. R. Harris.

3. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to pursue? In the early 1790’s the first Harris brothers started to create their own Lavender Waters and Classic Colognes alongside the more traditional remedies that apothecaries would have created. Soon Harris’s got a reputation in the fashionable St James’s area of London for these colognes and it is a popularity which survives to this day.

4. Describe a few steps you you to make this happen. The quality of the products has always been of the utmost importance to every generation of Harris from the 1790’s until the present day. This, combined with an interest in creating new and innovative products has meant that D. R. Harris has stayed interesting and relevant for over 220 years.

5. How would you deal with a customer who didn’t know what they wanted? We have many customers who have been shopping with us for over 50 years and know exactly what they want but also many who are just discovering us for the first time and don’t know our products at all. With these customers we ask them what sort of scents and products they usually like but generally just give them the time and space to try everything out and decide for themselves. Of course, there is only so much smelling you can do before it becomes a blur!

6. What are some of your accomplishments as a business? I think one of the main accomplishments of the business has got to be the fact that it still exists after 224 years! One of our strongest points as a business is our discreet but attentive customer service. We have a great number of regular customers who are very loyal. We are now enjoying a much larger audience around the world and also many younger customers are now discovering us which is very edifying.

7. What do you believe makes a quality product? Insisting on the best ingredients and not cutting corners.

8. Where do you get your inspiration from? We try and not to be too affected by what other companies are doing. We know that there are many people who like the way we are and we are not trying to become something else. We listen to our customers a lot and take their comments on board if we are re-formulating or making a change to the packaging. We’re also always willing to listen to people’s suggestions for new products.

How to: Trim your Mustache

579937e16c445e576f4fb85042f03823There are many mustache shapes, styles and sizes these days. This trimming tutorial will give you the basics to trim and shape the mustache you want.

You will need:

Firstly know what style mustache you want. Then once you have figured that out we can begin.

Dampen your mustache with water and comb through the hair with the fine-toothed comb. Look for long hairs that are sticking up or that are too long. Trim those hairs! Start at the middle of your mustache and work your way outwards. This helps maintain the length and bushiness of your mustache. After that move to trimming above the top lip. keep the middle of the mustache short, just above the pink of the top lip so you are able to eat and drink without it getting in the way or smelling.  Secondly, trim the top of the mustache for shape and definition. Some mustaches are uneven in this area below the nose and that’s okay, all you need to do is use a mustache razor. This is a quick and simple task.

Once you have trimmed those extra hairs away then move onto the next area, the bottom of the mustache. The bottom of the mustache is trimmed for a smooth even line otherwise your mustache will look uneven. This helps keep even parameters around the mustache. See diagram below:

mustachediagram

Once the trimming is taken care of and the areas are under control you can use the mustache wax. Apply it to your index finger, middle finger and thumb and rub them together so the wax warms up a little between the fingers. Then slowly apply the wax on your mustache. When applying the wax to the mustache make sure you squeeze your mustache to really get the wax in the hairs. Towards the ends twist the hair with your fingers to get a curl at the end. This method will keep the wax rooted into the mustache. Do this a couple times until you feel satisfied with the style and curl.

Voila, you are done!

That simple!
